Chong worried over emphasis on exam results
JERANTUT: An education system that only emphasises good examination results is worrying, said Deputy Education Minister Chong Sin Woon.
In reacting to the sad case where a bright teenager was believed to have taken his own life over a tough SPM subject paper, Chong said there was more to life than the number of As scored in examinations.
“That is not the first time it has happened. Education’s main objectives are supposed to enhance our children’s knowledge, thinking, observation skills and judgment capabilities.
“It is not about the number of As they can score in their exams,” he said at a Chinese cultural show held to raise funds for five Chinese vernacular schools here on Wednesday night.
Recounting an incident at a recent event he attended, Chong said press photographers had requested pupils who scored straight As in the UPSR to pose for a group photograph but there were still two others in their seats.
“While the straight As pupils went up on stage to get their photograph taken, the two who did not score straight As felt left out and started crying.
“How did our education come to this level that we place so much emphasis on just results? Even at the UPSR level, we are already putting so much pressure on our children,” said Chong.
