In every educational institution, testing, evaluation and assessment are used to measure the mastery of the assigned materials given, the ability of students using the learning materials and does the students meet the stated objectives and goals.
Many would say that assessments are for educators to gather information to base scores or grades but it is actually providing students to know their own learning.
Knowledgeable educators normally know the difference between measurement, testing, evaluation and assessment.
Most teachers learned during their college days on a test or quiz is used to examine someone's knowledge of something to determine what he or she knows or has learned. Testing measures the level of skill or knowledge that has been reached.
Evaluation is the process of making judgments based on criteria and evidence.
Only recently that assessment is the talk about of the town and this gather that assessment is the process of documenting knowledge, skills, attitudes and beliefs, usually in measurable terms.
The goal of assessment is to make improvements, as opposed to simply being judged. In an educational context, assessment is the process of describing, collecting, recording, scoring, and interpreting information about learning.
Involvement of parents should also be considered as at this point many would have realized that learning can be fun as we are constantly learning no matter where we are.
To be successful, we need to have confidence in ability to learn and need to be a lifelong learner and assessment plays a role in developing our confidence in learning and lifelong learning skills.
What ever you do from the homework, assignment or quiz given, you still need to study in order to know the materials.
A good way to understand the importance of assessment is to think about learning skills. In football for example, you will be told by the coach on your performance on the field, and this tells you on how to control your passing and kicking while the game is on.
When you are learning a skill, assessment or feedback is automatic. When you are learning science or technology, the feedback process needs to be made known through assessment.
Assessment doesn't have to be a written exam. You can know if you have successfully learned something in a number of different ways, depending on what you are trying to learn.
There are many different ways to assess learning and becoming skillful and self assessment are important lifelong learning skills.
