Peluk Isteri

Integrity: Let us always be honest

THE full-page advertisement on "Integrity " (NST, Nov 6) by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission is to be commended. It was an eye-catching advertisement with a large picture of an eye watching us.
It had the words "Integrity is doing the right thing even if nobody is watching" at the top and the statement "Let's make a difference, fight corruption" at the bottom.

Integrity is defined as the quality of being honest and of always having high moral principles.

This moral element has to be instilled in our thoughts, words and actions.

However, we have people in our workplace who show commitment and dedication only in the presence of their bosses or colleagues. When people are watching, they work hard to impress their bosses and others.

But when there is no one in the office, they slow down and relax.

Integrity, as the catchphrase goes, is doing the right thing even if nobody is watching.

True integrity is displayed by how we act and react to our thoughts and actions.

This is a fundamental element that needs to be given serious thought in the workplace for increased productivity.

Every person should work and give the best all the time, and not just when someone is watching.

In this respect, teachers, as role models and educators of our children, should have the highest integrity and moral principles.

The words "Integrity is doing the right thing even if nobody is watching" can apply to teachers in two aspects.

Teachers should go to class according to the time-table and perform all their academic and co-curricular duties as scheduled.

When the head teacher is in school, teachers work hard.

But the moment the head teacher leaves the school, the teachers relax and congregate in the staff room to do their own work, giving truth to the adage that when the cat is away, the mice will play.

Though this is not a common occurrence in our schools, teachers should work with integrity.

The other aspect is with the usage of stationery provided by the school.

There have been instances of teachers taking more than what is required and using them for personal use.

They usually misuse A4 paper, printers, photocopiers and even the telephones.

Some also use computers, laptops and compact discs for their own use.

Many justify this by saying everyone is doing it.

They also feel they can get away with it as nobody is watching them.

We should do the right thing all the time because God is watching us all the time and we are accountable to Him for our thoughts, words and actions.
