Abdul Ghafar Mahmud Takes Over As Director-General Of Education

Abd. Ghafar Ketua Pengarah Pelajaran Malaysia baharu

KUALA LUMPUR 7 Nov. - Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin mengumumkan bahawa Pengarah Institut Aminuddin Baki, Datuk Abd. Ghafar Mahmud (gambar), 54, dilantik menjadi Ketua Pengarah Pelajaran yang baharu berkuat kuasa esok.

Timbalan Perdana Menteri yang juga Menteri Pelajaran memberitahu, Abd. Ghafar akan menggantikan Tan Sri Alimuddin Mohd. Dom yang bersara wajib hari ini.

''Selaras dengan peruntukan Perlembagaan Persekutuan Perkara 144(3), Yang di-Pertuan Agong dengan nasihat Perdana Menteri telah memperkenankan pelantikan Abd. Ghafar sebagai Ketua Pengarah Pelajaran yang baharu,'' katanya dalam kenyataan yang dikeluarkan di sini hari ini.

Beliau memberitahu, pelantikan Abd. Ghafar dibuat berasaskan pengalaman luas dalam bidang pendidikan, pengetahuan serta kompetensi yang dimilikinya.

''Kerajaan percaya, pengalaman, pengetahuan serta komitmen Abd.Ghafar akan membolehkan beliau melaksanakan tugas seperti mana diperuntukan oleh Akta Pendidikan 1996,'' kata beliau.

Tambah Muhyiddin, kerajaan juga merakamkan setinggi-tinggi penghargaan dan terima kasih kepada Alimuddin atas sumbangan kepada perkhidmatan awam serta negara selama 34 tahun.

Alimuddin memegang jawatan Ketua Pengarah Pelajaran sejak 16 Julai 2007. Abd. Ghafar berkelulusan Ijazah Sarjana dalam bidang pendidikan dari Universiti of East Anglia, Norwich, United Kingdom serta pemegang Ijazah Sarjana Muda Sastera dari Universiti Malaya.

Beliau memulakan kerjaya dalam perkhidmatan awam sebagai pegawai perkhidmatan pelajaran pada 1 Mei 1977.

Sepanjang perkhidmatannya di Kementerian Pelajaran, Abd. Ghafar memegang pelbagai jawatan antaranya sebagai Pengarah Institut Aminuddin Baki sejak tahun lepas, Ketua Nazir, Jemaah Nazir dan Jaminan Kualiti pada 2008 dan Pengarah Bahagian Sukan, Seni dan Kokurikulum pada 2007.

Di samping itu, beliau juga pernah menjawat jawatan Ketua Penolong Pengarah, Unit Berasrama Penuh serta Ketua Penolong Pengarah, Unit Perancang dan Pembangunan, Bahagian Sekolah pada 2001.

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 8 (Bernama)-- The Director of the Institut Aminuddin Baki, Datuk Abdul Ghafar Mahmud, has been appointed as the new Director-General of Education, succeeding Tan Sri Alimuddin Mohd Dom who retired yesterday.

Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said the appointment, which took effect yesterday, was in line with the provision 144(3) of the Federal Constitution.

"Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin has given his consent to the appointment of Abdul Ghafar as the Director-General of Education on Premier Grade Staff III," he said in a statement, here Sunday.

Muhyiddin, who is also the Education Minister, said the appointment was made based on the vast experience that Abdul Ghafar

had in the field of education and knowledge as well as his competency.

"I believe that his experience, knowledge and commitment will enable him to discharge his responsibilities as provided for in the Education Act 1996," said Muhyiddin.

Muhyiddin also recorded the government's appreciation for the contribution made by Alimuddin throughout his 34 years' service in the field of education.

Abdul Ghafar, 56, holds a Bachelors degree in Education from the University of East Anglia, Norwich, United Kingdom and a Master of Arts from the University of Malaya.

He began his career in public service as an Education Service Officer on May 1, 1977.

Throughout his service in the field of education, Abdul Ghafar had held various key posts including as the Education Attache in the Malaysian Students Department, Washington, United States (1989), and Head of the School Inspectorate and Quality Assurance, Ministry of Education in 2008.
