Retraining for 65,000 English teachers

JOHOR BARU: The Education Ministry aims to retrain up to 65,000 English teachers nationwide to improve the teaching quality of the subject.

Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said 5,000 teachers were retrained last year and 20,000 would be involved this year.

He was speaking to reporters during the excellence awards function at Sekolah Tun Fatimah here on May 27.

Muhyiddin also said that other than English, the ministry also hoped to focus on improving the standard of Science and Mathematics among students.

“Another aspect would be to ensure that our students are also active in extra-curricular activities as academic qualifications alone will not be enough to generate holistic students,” he said.

During the event, Muhyiddin allocated about RM7.8mil to the school, which will be channelled towards the building of a multi-purpose hall and a four-storey dormitory.

Earlier, in Batu Pahat, Muhyiddin said the Government would always give the best infrastructure and technology to help police in protecting the country.

He said police were facing challenging times amidst the development that was taking place, besides rapid social growth.

He said the police force should be given the best infrastructure so that it could perform its best.

“Better logistics with comfortable infrastructure is needed to nurture the police into a world-class force,” he said after opening the new Batu Pahat district police headquarters.

Muhyiddin stressed that history had shown that the police had never failed in giving their utmost in protecting the public. DESIREE TRESA GASPER AND MOHD FARHAAN SHAH The STAR News Nation 28/05/2014
